MELISSA DE BRUIN (“Long Shot”) – Casa Cara Reservations

Melissa grew up on a farm where her father bred lions and her mother operated a guest house. Growing up with the lions, she knew them really well and she was eventually in charge of taming lions that could not be re-introduced to the wild after being caught in poaching traps. She set a Guinness World Record when she became the first (and only) person ever to stare down a charging lion! The lions also had to be fed and Melissa often went out to cull antelope that were overgrazing the neighbouring farmers land. This was never an easy task as they lived in the flat parts of the Kalahari Desert and shots had to be taken from over a kilometre out. Very few farmers in the area could make those shots, even with their customised high-powered scoped rifles. Melissa made them with a scope-less 30-06, her best shot being a Kudu Bull at 1800meters! From there her nickname “Long Shot.” She could obviously keep all she killed to feed her lions. Melissa might not be the best cage fighter in town but she has years of experience in the tourism and entertainment industry. She was the CEO of an international hotel group where she spent most of her time on planes travelling between hotels. One day, on the way back from Shanghai the stress got to her and she felt that she could just jump out of that plane! It so happened that a Parys skydiving company had an advert in the in-flight magazine and on landing she immediately booked her first skydive. The free fall over the Vaal River cleared her head, she fell in love with skydiving and realised that she could never get back onto an airliner ever again. She resigned the next day. That same weekend she fell in love with Parys and decided to buy the small b&b she was residing at. That small b&b has since evolved into the Casa Cara Brand. Between skydiving, running the guest house and lodge and being a part-time skydiving instructor, Melissa is wife to Tiaan and mother of Cara & Christiaan, the most beautiful kids in all of Parys!

MARNY LABUSCHAGNE (“The American”) – Casa Cara Weddings & Functions

One would think that Marny packaged in her delicate little frame would have a background in flower arranging or ballroom dancing. Think again! Marny’s father was a world renowned aircraft mechanic and as such, they travelled to where ever he was needed. For many years though he repaired ex-military American helicopters that were shot down over Vietnam during the war. Living on the American Airforce base the locals all assumed that her family were American and Marny was soon known by all the local kids as “The American.” Marny didn’t take kindly to this as she was a born and bred South African and it wasn’t long before she got into her first fistfight. She got a solid beating from a boy called Whan Ching. Strangely enough, the sight of her own blood fueled her fire for fighting and soon she was a black belt in most of the Eastern fighting disciplines. Needless to say, Whan Ching now has a lisp and it’s a struggle for him to hold a pen as his fingers no longer work as they used to. After Vietnam, Marny’s family still travelled a lot, never settling down for more than a few months. Marny couldn’t hold a decent job as there was never enough time to work her way up the corporate ladder. She remembered her passion for fighting and from then on whenever they landed in a new city she would seek out the underground cage fighting circuit. She would walk up to the meanest fighter around and slap him so hard that he would giggle for a week without remembering why. Fighting as “The American” she soon made enough money to buy a farm in the Cape Winelands and she settled in South Africa. Not long after on a lazy Sunday afternoon she was riding her wild stallion and checking up on her grapevines when a helicopter appeared out of nowhere and swooped down just over her head. The stallion bolted and threw her off around a sharp bend, she hit her head and was unconscious. She awoke to two very concerned blue eyes attached to a hunky looking dude in a pilot’s uniform. To make a really interesting story short, he ended up becoming her husband and a great father to Leanke and Lumy or as he likes to think of them… Mr & Miss World 2033. By the way “The American” is still feared in many countries!
